Trillian is a universal instant messenger

Trillian was invented by the founders of Cerulean Studios. Serving as chat software and instant messenger, Trillian can connect to several other different instant messengers such as: Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, ICQ, mIRC, AIM, and IRC.

According to the Cerulean Studios, "Cerulean Studios was founded in May of 1998 by Kevin Kurtz and Scott Werndorfer. The first version of Trillian was released on July 1, 2000."

Andy Magoon is listed as the Cerulean Studios developer and Ryan Saghir aka "The Kid" is credited as being the lead artist, skinner and web designer. At the time of this writing, Cerulean Studios is headquartered in Connecticut.

Scott Werndorfer and Kevin Kurtz - Trillian Inventors

Scott Werndorfer, a 21-year-old college dropout, is a native of Brookfield, Connecticut. While still living at his parent's home, Werndorfer used $10,000 of his savings to start Cerulean Studios together with fellow computer geek 24-year-old Kevin Kurtz of Florida. The duo lived on donations from the freeware version of Trillian, while building their company.

History of Trillian - Instant Messenger

On July 1, 2000, the first freeware release of Trillian (Version 0.50/0.51) with IRC support was released. On September 10, 2002, the last freeware version of Trillian (Version 0.74) was released. Trillian Pro version 1.0 was released the same day.

Trillian encourages creativity among its users by allowing for homemade skins and providing tools to design your own. Skins are part of the graphic shell of a software program. Trillian also allows its users to avoid having to download a different instant messengers for every instant messenger or IM a friend or contact could be using. Trillian provides compatibility with various other instant messengers.

Trillian Battles With Other Instant Messenger Companies

Some Trillian compatible instant messenger providers like Microsoft who own MSN Messenger are happy with a Trillian presence in the marketplace. However, AOL owners of AIM were not. AOL blocked Trillian users from connecting to AOL users. The Trillian team reprogrammed around the block in one week.

Trillian The Name

The name Trillian comes from Douglas Adams' book the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Trillian is a character from that book. The following is a quote from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

"A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have and a galaxy full of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox - the two headed, three armed ex-hippie and totally out to lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian, Zaphod's girlfriend (formally Tricia McMillan), whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone..."
