Particle
Accelerators
The reason for most of the development
of of particle accelerators has been because they are needed to research
into the properties of atomic nuclei and subatomic particles. A particle
accelerator produces a beam of fast-moving, electrically charged atomic
or subatomic particles.
Cyclotron
Ernest Orlando Lawrence invented
the cyclotron, a device that greatly increased the speed with which projectiles
could be hurled at atomic nuclei, the first particle accelerator to achieve
high energies.
